Composting

Composting
Composting is the natural process of transforming food scraps, yard trimmings, and other organic material into a valuable soil amendment. Composting helps reduce the amount of organic waste sent to landfills and creates nutrient-rich material that can be used in gardens and landscapes.
Explore the programs below to learn how you can participate in Glendale’s composting efforts.
Learn How to Compost
Reduce organic waste at home by learning how to compost!
With nearly 40% of Glendale’s waste made up of organics, home composting is an easy way to reduce landfill waste and enrich your garden.
Check out our virtual workshop to learn the basics of backyard composting, how to manage a compost bin, and how to troubleshoot common issues.
Request Your Free Composting Bin
Glendale residents can request a free composting bin to help create nutrient-rich compost at home. Bins are available to residents living in houses or apartments. Teachers may also request bins for school composting projects.
Visit a Neighborhood Composting Hub
In August 2025, Glendale launched two community composting hubs at the Verdugo Park and Palmer Park community gardens. Residents can drop off approved organic materials and participate in local composting activities as part of the City’s Zero Waste efforts.
